May 15, 1986. As I stood in the recruiters office, preparing to take the Oath of Office as a Naval Officer, I had no clue what I was getting myself into.

It all started in the dead of a Duluth, Minnesota winter when a Navy Officer recruiter visited my Industrial Safety Masters Program class of students. He was there to promote the opportunity the Navy had for those of us graduating in the spring. I dont recall what he said other than San Diego and Florida. My mind immediately saw sun and sand and my interest was piqued.

I did not have a strong tie to the military other than my uncle being an Air Force pilot and my father being a National Guardsman. The military option was not one spoken about in our family. It had never crossed my mind!

I was a Midwest girl ready to take a chance on an unknown opportunity so I raised my hand.

Little did I know that this opportunity would lead to world travel, adventures to places Americans had never set foot, meetings with heads of state, ambassadors, and senior officials of countries around the world. Throughout my career I found myself in an underground command center and control bunker during 9/11, on a carrier flight deck in the Suez Canal, training the US President for a flight mission, and assisting in humanitarian planning and execution for tsunamis and earthquakes in SE Asia.

Raising my hand volunteered me for opportunities that changed my life. What started out as 3 years of lets see what the Navy is all about, turned into a 28-year career.

Opportunity knocked, I raised my hand.

Speaker Bio:
Gail Hathaway grew up in Hutchinson, Minnesota and now resides in San Antonio, Texas. She holds a MS degree in Industrial Safety from the University of Minnesota-Duluth. After graduation, she joined the US Navy in 1986.
