The Orientation Gap
You're working. You're networking. You're showing up. So why isn't it converting?
Most small business owners and independent service providers arent struggling because they lack skill, commitment, or hustle. Theyre struggling because the way they were taught to talk about what they do, and the habits they formed getting there, are quietly working against them in every conversation.
In this talk, Jason Jones names the hidden mechanism behind one of the most common and frustrating experiences in small business: doing everything you're supposed to do, having conversations that seem to go well, following up, and still seeing very little turn into actual clients. Not because your offer isnt good. Not because you need a better website or a sharper elevator pitch. Because the orientation underneath all that activity is pointed in the wrong direction.
Drawing on research from behavioral economics, organizational psychology, and hundreds of client conversations, Jason introduces a simple but powerful framework that reframes the business development challenge most small business owners facenot as a sales, confidence, or visibility problem, but as a perceptual one.
The service providers who build consistent inbound inquiry and referral-driven practices arent the ones with the most polished pitch or the biggest following. Theyre the ones who see their market clearly and help the people they talk to do the same. This talk will make you look at your last dozen conversations differently. and give you something concrete to change in the very next one.
Learning Objectives:
An understanding of why consistent activity and genuine effort can still produce almost no new clients and the specific shift that changes that pattern without working harder.
Awareness of the common beliefs about selling and business development that feel like good practice but are quietly working against small business owners and service providers every day.
A new, behavior-based perspective on how buyers actually make decisions, so you can approach networking conversations, discovery calls, and follow-up in a way thats more effective.
The difference between simply telling people what you do and helping them understand why it matters to them is what determines whether a conversation leads to action or fades away.
A practical framework for identifying the one urgent problem your ideal clients are already feeling, and how to become known for that problem so the right people start reaching out to you.
Speaker Bio: Jason Jones, CEC, PCC, is the founder of The Coaching Hour and creator of the Adaptive Conversations for Mindful Selling program. He spent over twenty years owning and operating service-based businesses before bringing those hard-won lessons to his coaching practice where for the past decade he has worked exclusively with fractional leaders, consultants, and independent service providers.
Jason is a leadership, communication, and business coach who works with practitioners who are skilled at what they do and ready to stop leaving business on the table. His work centers on the idea that the most powerful thing any service provider can develop is not a better pitch, it is the ability to see clearly, and to help others do the same.
