Two servers working together at The Nicollet Island Inn during the 1990s honed their skills at one of the Twin Cities premier restaurant/hotels. After work hours, David Burley and Stephanie Shimp dreamed up the idea for what became the Highland Grill.
With each year becoming busier than the last, David and Stephanie expanded their collection of neighborhood restaurants to become the Blue Plate Restaurant Company, which includes Highland Grill, Groveland Tap, Longfellow Grill, Edina Grill, 3 Squares, The Lowry, The Blue Barn (Minnesota State Fair), The Freehouse, Mercury Dining Room and Rail, and Shindig Event Center.
The Freehouse. There are other brewpubs, taprooms and bars that serve only one brand of beer. But we are not that. We serve our beer side-by-side with that of our competition with the belief that quality and selection of our ingredients and the care and craft of our brewmasters and chefs will shine through in every batch we brew, every pint we pour and every plate we serve.
For the locals, The Freehouse is their favorite hangout spot. For newcomers, The Freehouse is the place to be. We serve everything from Breakfast to Beer, so raise your glass and enjoy a little taste of freedom.
